EEME Project DIY Display – Review

EEME Project DIY Display review {%{% Homeschool Creations

Zachary has been having far too much fun getting his fingers working on electronic projects from EEME. After working on the Project Genius Light recently, he was more than ready to jump into a new project and see what he could create with circuitry! When that little brown box showed up, it was immediately on his desk and he was ready to start! He is definitely our build and create boy, and any STEM project something he is more than happy to focus on (if only we could bottle that attention for other subjects too – grins).

EEME has been blog sponsor for the last several months and sent us the Project DIY Display (ages 7-12) to work on together. When I say ‘together’ that roughly translates to me observing Zachary as he creates the project himself and explains the different concepts to me. It has been the perfect ‘hands-off’ for me, but opportunity to watch him learn.

The DIY Display project focuses on segmented LEDs. Remember the scoreboards way back in the day (maybe I’m dating myself talking about our high school scoreboard)? In this project, kids learn how to wire their own switch panel and make numbers display on a mini board. Project build time is approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours and 38 short lessons or modules.

We used the iPad this time to work through the free instructional videos and Zachary took a little over 1.5 hours to complete this project. He’s not one to get up and leave it alone, so once he started, he was on a mission to get it finished and working.

Project DIY Display from EEME {%{% Homeschool Creations-14

Compared to his last EEME project, I was able to sit back this time and observe while Zachary worked. If he had any questions or needed help with something, he just asked. At one point he needed a wire stripped (he may have broken one), so I helped with that and he was back working in just a few minutes.

He answered comprehension questions in between the short instructional clips – a huge help to see how much kids are understanding. Some of the questions he answered verbally rather than typing in his longer answers.

Inside an EEME Kit

EEME six project set

Unfortunately Zachary was well into building his kit before I realized that we didn’t have a picture of what came in it this time! However, each of the EEME project kits contains all of the components needed to build the monthly project.

Our first kit (or the first month in the subscription) contained a project kit with all the base pieces need to build that project. Future projects are built using those components as well:  a baseplate, breadboard, and a battery pack. These pieces are reusable. Our kit for the DIY Display included additional components that were necessary to complete this specific project. All curriculum is online and your children can watch and re-watch the videos at anytime.

Projects build in difficulty and are geared for children ages 7-12.  If you have an electronics lover in your home, this is a great monthly subscription plan to teach them more about LED’s, resistors, transistors, capcitors, and much more! If those words are all foreign to you, don’t worry – EEME explains everything in the lessons and you don’t have to be a whiz at electronics for your children to succeed in building and understanding!

If you don’t want to wait for the once a month shipment, you can take advantage of their 6 month project bundle HERE and receive free shipping as well.

How the DIY Display Works

Here’s a quick little peek at our completed Project DIY Display from EEME. It’s a short clip, but shows it in action…

Finished the switch panel from @projecteeme – here’s a quick peek at how it works. Depending on which number is flipped on the switch panel, Zachary can make different numbers light up. This project used the base from our Project Genius activity last month. #projecteeme #Homeschool #hsscience #science

Feed readers can watch the video here.

When each switch is toggled on, there is a closed circuit allowing current to flow from one end of the battery to the other end. When toggled off, the circuit is opened and the segment is turned off (or the current cannot flow). Each of the switches is wired so you can toggle them on and off with other switches to create different numbers.

What You’ll LOVE About EEME

Project DIY Display from EEME Homeschool Creations

Aside from the fact that all the supplies are included in each of the EEME project kits, the video curriculum is well put together and explain the building process in detail. Each of the videos is between 2 – 10 minutes long. In addition:

  • videos explain the step-by-step process AND the principles involved (how/why something works) – a huge help for parents who don’t know the answers themselves (cough)
  • shorter videos help those with limited attention spans
  • comprehension questions ensure kids are understanding what you are doing
  • videos can be stopped/paused if needed during the process
  • the videos are free to watch – check them out here and get a peek!

We have honestly LOVED these projects from EEME. It has been the perfect fit for Zachary to work on independently. The projects would be wonderful extensions to current curriculum or even as after school learning – or even make a great gift! We’ve learned so much working through two projects already.

There are different purchase options available, including a basic monthly subscription, individual projects, and a 6 month Project Set. They have different purchase options, but we’ve completed the first two projects so far from the basic subscription basic subscription.  You can find more information on the EEME website, or follow them on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, or Twitter.

Life of Fred Beginning Readers Review

Life of Fred beginning readers set 1 - simple, fun, and engaging readers for children

A four year old named Fred has been a long-time friend in our house. Fred typically visits when it’s math time, but the last few weeks he has also been a part of our reading time with our youngest.

Time and again I’ve mentioned that our boys are very cautious readers. That’s the nice way of saying our girls started reading just.like.that and our boys, using the same techniques and such, get frustrated, think they can’t read, fuss, cry, or all of the above when it comes to reading time. It’s been trying to say the least.

Don’t get me wrong, they both made progress and our reading program really is fabulous and works, but last year it was a million loud cheers when Zachary finally decided to sit down and really read a book all by himself. And he hasn’t stopped since. Some kids just aren’t wired the same. (There’s a shocking newsflash, eh?)

Kaleb is pushing along the same path as his brother. Despite encouragement and the fact that he can read, there are days when it is a struggle. A huge struggle. We sit down and cuddle up, work on a lesson, and again starts the cycle. We’ll stop when needed and continue with encouragement, but it’s just hard.

The Life of Fred math books are a huge hit in our house and something we have enjoyed for years. When Educents asked if I would be willing to take a look at the Life of Fred Eden beginning readers…well, it wasn’t a very difficult choice. I’ll admit that even I was a bit curious about what exactly was inside the pages of these books. (Incidentally, they have some great deals on Life of Fred products right now!)

Here’s a peek at one of our favorites that I shared on Facebook (you can also watch it via YouTube).

We have been LOVING the Life of Fred Beginning Readers we received from Educents earlier this month. Here is a quick peek inside and a little more on what we are loving. Stay tuned for a blog post today with more (and a giveaway!)! (Sponsor)

More About the Life of Fred Beginning Readers

life of fred eden readers-26

The Life of Fred beginning readers set 1 contains the following six books: Blue, Bus, Lake, Potato Dreams, Ducks, and Rain. Each of the books is focused on a specific color (you’ll notice the cover titles are all done in the color they feature), so children learn eighteen color words when working through the books in the three different sets. (See sample pages here.)

The books all follow Fred, a four year old genius boy who has a doll named Kingie. Together they go on adventures. In this series, you follow Fred and Kingie as they take the bus to Fall River Lake, learn about different colors (blue, orange, red, brown, pink, and gray), meet ducks, talk about emotions, learn how to cook potatoes, and so much more random silliness.

Each hardcover book features a combination of real pictures and images along with drawings of Fred and Kingie, other creatures, and cartoons. They are completely non-sensical stories that children l.o.v.e. to no end. In short, the stories are simple and engaging. Silly, yes, but in such an amazingly fun way.

Targeted toward children ages 4 and up.

Our Thoughts on the Life of Fred Beginning Readers

life of fred eden readers-44

We have the first six readers (Eden set 1), but Kaleb has been toting around his reader pile for the last two weeks. Every day he pulls out two or three of them and we read and re-read the stories together. And it isn’t just Kaleb who has been engaged with the books! As we have curled up and the laughter begins bubbling from him, the other three kids are soon crowding around to see what is happening with Fred and Kingie. (Yes, they all love Fred – even the high schooler.)

Where this boy normally reads with ZERO voice inflection (i.e. questions don’t sound like questions and he has completely flat tone overall), he is giggling, reading with different voices, speech rate patterns, and truly engaging with the stories. It has been so amazing and fun to watch the process.

life of fred eden readers

These silly, non-sensical stories are bringing this little boy to life. Yes, he still gets a little frustrated here and there reading, but he tries so hard. We had intended to videotape him reading a story, but he was extremely nervous and after five tries – well, we decided that we’d just tell you that he thinks Fred is very funny. Very funny. Kingie even more so (especially when you see what Kingie packs to take to the lake). We’ve had more conversations about how Kingie could have even fit a pool table into his bag, never mind lifted it.

We laugh at the drawings (Fred does have a square head after all). We laugh especially hard at Kingie’s paintings – because they are always amazing and completely ridiculous. Did I mention these books are funny?

life of fred eden readers-99

Text on each page is fairly minimal in the six books we have, and the books aren’t overwhelming, wonderful for hesitant readers. Keep in mind this is not a full reading program (no teacher’s guide or specific introduction of blends/words in any order), but readers for children to practice the skills they have already learned and help them further enjoy the reading process. They may likely pick up several new words and some added confidence in the as they go through the stories too.

While initially I wasn’t sure what to think of the books, I did know how much our kids have loved Life of Fred for math, and these readers are no different. They are books I know we will go back to over and over again. Yes, they are beginning readers, but so often that confidence boost and added humor are needed to bring life to our reading!

3 Useful Tools for Your Homeschool Year

Three useful tools for your homeschool year

Next week officially starts our homeschool year. Lord have mercy, I am not ready yet!! While there are a few homeschool supplies we love and use daily, this year we found three new items that we can’t wait to get started on using – and I’m sure will become things we wondered how we ever did without. Two of these the kids get to use and the last one is a mom-only – no kids are allowed to swipe my supplies! (Yes, I may get a bit territorial at times, I’ll admit it!)

Folding Bookstand

useful homeschool tools-7

Laurianna has a lot of larger textbooks this year in high school and this would have been so handy to have last year as well! The folding bookstand is really compact and opens/closes easily so she can take it with her to co-op and quickly prop it up on her desk to hold one of her books, save a little desk space, and keep her place in the book.

It’s actually a cookbook holder, but will definitely do the job, especially with those larger books. Above you can see a quick video of how it works.

Boogie Board eWriter

useful homeschool tools

Sometimes there are things that you just don’t want to use paper for or don’t necessarily need to have a record of. The kids will all be using the Boogie Board LCD tablet for spelling and a few other subjects that will allow us to work on the tablet and then erase it when we are done.

There is a special pen that writes on the board, so you can doodle, draw, or take notes to your heart’s content. When you are done and need a clean slate, you push a button at the top and the entire contents erase, leaving you with a fresh screen. The kids have already been having a blast drawing pictures and using it for their math work.

For us, this will also be handy when traveling and we don’t want to bring a bunch of extra paper (yes, I’m one of the moms that might make her kids do school work when we travel). There are bluetooth versions available which would sync your notes to your computer, but for now the standard board should be great for us (especially since this is 1/4 of the price)!

Erasable Pens

pilot frixion pens

These are the ‘mom-only’ supplies. Yes, they are fun and the kids will enjoy them, but sometimes I like to have something for just me. For the last year and a bit I’ve been using the Pilot Frixion pens but this year bought a set that is clickable – meaning I don’t have to take the cap off (and lose it). The eraser of the pen stays in place and the set comes in a variety of colors too. Being able to erase any mistakes = heaven. And ten colors – yes, please.

My color-coding brain did a happy dance when I saw the clickable version of these pens.

Seriously they have been the best pens ever. The ones I used last year were so handy for correcting papers, because I like using pen, but hate that when I make a mistake I have to scribble everything out. I like a smaller point too on my pens, so the .05 size is perfect for using in my planner or correcting or anything.

EEME Project Genius Light Review

Helping our kids have a deep understanding of what the science, technological, electronics, and math (STEM) principals are behind various technology is so important in life! If you are one that isn’t familiar with circuitry, but have a child who is – read on, because your children will LOVE the projects and lessons we’ve been covering recently.

Project Genius Light Review from EEME

Zachary is our hands-on, loves to learn about electronics kid. He is constantly trying to figure out how things work, sometimes to the detriment of things in our household. Note: That doesn’t mean I’m always happy when he tries to ‘fix, aka mangle’ something.

The Project Genius Light from EEME

EEME offered us the chance to work on the Project Genius Light (for kids ages 7-12), an LED circuit board that teaches kids about electronics in a meaningful and engaging way. Can you guess who was excited about helping out? From the moment the box arrived in our house, Zachary was ready to start.

Here’s a look at the Genius Light project:

With the Genius Light project, you will assemble a simple LED circuit system that does the smart thing – lights up when it is dark and dims when it is light. (30 lessons)

Your family will learn about:
– LED light bulbs
– Resistors
– Photoresistors
– Breadboards
– Project build time: 1.5 – 2.5 hours

Project Genius Light from EEME-4

I’ll be honest and tell you – I was a little hesitant on pulling it out for Zachary though and put it off to the side for a bit because I didn’t want him to get started and then forget about it or get distracted. But then I forgot and the box got pushed aside until he found it and held the box in front of me every day until I opened up the laptop to have him watch the free instructional videos and let him work on the project.

Project Genius Light from EEME-18

Although he wanted to work on it by himself, I hung around in case he needed any help. Sometimes he can get ahead of himself and want to do the lessons out of order. For the most part, I tried to stay out of what he was doing and he quickly figured out that the lessons are in an order for a reason. As he began going through the lessons and tried to skip ahead, he went back and picked up where he should have followed along.

Project Genius Light from EEME-21

In between the short video clips on the projects, there were comprehension questions to answer so I was able to see how much Zachary was understanding. Rather than having him try to type in the longer answers, he gave me an oral answer (we were watching via the iPad and it was much harder to type answers on for him).

RSS Feed subscribers can click here to watch the video

Overall, the videos, lessons, and building took us a little over an hour to complete (allotted time is 1.5 to 2.5 hours). Above is a video clip of Zachary explaining one of the circuits he built and why/how it worked. I may have learned a few new terms and things about circuits in the process!

What is in an EEME project kit?

Each of the EEME project kits contains all of the components needed to build the monthly project. The first month you receive a project kit with all of the base pieces you will need to build future projects on, including a baseplate, breadboard, and a battery pack. These pieces are reusable. All curriculum is online and your children can watch and re-watch the videos at anytime.

Projects build in difficulty and on what children are learning and are geared for children ages 7-12. And psst – they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you have an electronics lover in your home, this is a great monthly subscription plan to teach them more about LED’s, resistors, transistors, capcitors, and much more! If those words are all foreign to you, don’t worry – they explain everything and you may learn a thing or two before your child is done.

What I Love About EEME

The videos from the EEME project kits are well put together and explain the building process well. Each of the videos is between 2 – 10 minutes long. In addition:

Homeschool Made Simple – Learning Through Literature

homeschool-made-simple-slider-641x215
Some of the most enjoyable and memorable times in the years of our homeschooling have revolved around reading together and learning through literature. When Compass Classroom asked me to take a peek at a new video series, Homeschool Made Simple with Carole Joy Seid, well – let’s just say I was excited. Literature-based learning is something that speaks to my heart and we’ve seen such great results in our own family because of it.

The Homeschool Made Simple Video Series

In the Homeschool Made Simple video series, Carole Joy Seid’s heart comes through as she speaks to parents on how to focus their learning on great books and keep reading as the core of their learning. Through literature, whether a biography, classic literature of a period, or books about a historical period, we can learn a variety of subjects – and learning can be as uncomplicated as we make it.
For families new to homeschooling or seasoned homeschoolers, there is something for everyone in the series. Think of it as a seminar that comes right to your home to refresh you. There are many different methods of homeschooling available to us as families (and I am so very grateful for that!), and many of us will agree that books and stories are the base of so much that we learn together. This series from Carol Joy Seid is so much more than showing how literature can be the core of all we do; it is also a huge encouragement to parents and a model of how homeschooling can be done simply, be enjoyable to everyone, and also affordable.
Homeschool Made Simple

Workshops in Homeschool Made Simple:

There are six workshops in the Homeschool Made Simple series, available in either DVD format or as a download, and an included book list. You can watch when you have time, take notes, and revisit later through the months and years if you need encouragement or a refresher.

Introduction

1. Children & Reading
2. Choosing Books
3. Building Character in Children
4a. Math, Writing, Science, Art & Music
4b. Bible & A Typical Day
5. Children & Media
6. Teaching History Using Literature

I love that the setting of the series is ‘intimate’ – not videos taken at a large conference, but rather in someone’s living room and almost in a more 1:1 format – you feel like Carole is talking and encouraging you personally. Watching these videos (and I’m still finishing up the series!) has been a great reminder to me to slow down and re-evaluate plans – and simplify in a few areas.
Take a few minutes and watch a trailer of Homeschool Made Simple with Carole Joy Seid and get a feel for the class. You can also view a one of the workshops, Children and Reading, for free.

I would SO encourage you to watch the Children and Reading workshop today and rediscover the love of reading and learning through literature! How have you integrated reading into your curriculum for learning?

Elderberry Fruit Smoothie Recipe

Elderberry Fruit Smoothie recipe

Fruit smoothies are a something that our kids drink daily. More recently we’ve started adding something yummy to the mix – and for a little more health benefit too. After sharing a picture on Instagram the other day, several of you emailed for the recipe, so I thought it would be great to share. They are really simple, quick, HEALTHY, and our kids love them!

Elderberry Fruit Smoothie Ingredients

Makes 4 – 1 cup servings

kids elderberry fruit smoothie

  • 1 1/2 cups of kefir or plain yogurt (we use kefir for the probiotics)
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries (we love the Kirkland brand)
  • 2-4 teaspoons Elderberry Extract from Norm’s Farms
  • 1-2 ripe bananas (depends on their size, but they help naturally sweeten)
  • 2 Tbsp. flax seed (optional)
  • 1/4 honey or sweetener to taste
  • may also add 1/4 cup blueberries or additional fruit

Blend all ingredients in blender. We have had a Vitamix for 5+ years and love it! Definitely no problem breaking up those frozen strawberries. Once it’s blended, simply serve and enjoy! The kids have all enjoyed the addition of the elderberry extract, and I’m happy to add it to give that extra immunity boost!

    Why Elderberries?

image

Norm’s Farms sent us a bottle of Elderberry Extract to try and we love the taste! Smoothies are one way we found to add the benefits of elderberries to our day. Elderberries are naturally high in antioxidants and a ‘superfruit’ packed with Vitamins A, B, C, iron, and potassium (learn more about antioxidants here), and they are great for helping with immune support. Winter months can be tough on a family with multiple kids and this is one way we are combatting things in our house!

The Elderberry Extract from Norm’s Fars is made from elderberries native to North America and has simple ingredients. No added ingredients, keeping it simple and healthy!

We’ve also been using their Elderberry Wellness Syrup which is naturally flavored with honey, cinnamon, cloves, and a little bit of sugar. It is fabulous to take by the spoonful as a daily supplement, and would be a great cough syrup as well – soothing and something the kids wouldn’t mind taking!

There are several stores that carry Norm’s Farms elderberry products, but you can also order from their website online or via Amazon (and yay – they are a part of Prime!!). Click here for elderberry extract, elderberry syrup, and elderberry jam).

In addition to their extract and wellness syrup, they also offer a jam which we haven’t tried! Be sure to check out their recipe section as well! We have really enjoyed the two elderberry products we received and will definitely be ordering from them in the future!
