Friends and Heroes Homeschool Curriculum

This past summer at a homeschool convention I had the opportunity to meet the folks at Friends and Heroes, a company that produces an animated children’s adventure. There was plenty of time to watch their videos and also get a hands on look at their homeschool curriculum. Seeing it brought back memories of shows we watched as children, and I was so impressed with how they have taken an already engaging series and turned it into full unit studies!

Not familiar with the Friends and Heroes series? Here is a little information to help you out {because they say it so much better than I can!}.

Friends and Heroes Homeschool Unit StudyFriends and Heroes is an animated children’s adventure based in ancient Egypt, Israel and Rome. The story follows two young friends, Macky and Portia, as they fight for justice against the Roman Empire.  Each episode consists of two Bible Stories in which children can learn about characters from the Old and New Testament.

Each of the Friends and Heroes award-winning adventures and Bible stories on DVD have go-along homeschool unit studies. The materials are well laid out, full of information for families, and can easily be integrated into your homeschool day. Units can be purchased separately or as part of an entire package {DVDs and unit studies together}. Overall there are thirteen units available for homeschool use.

The homeschool unit studies include:

  • Complete parent lesson plans that includes answer keys and certificates of completion along with internet links {printable and reusable}
  • Student Workbook of activities to print off
  • Full-length Friends and Heroes DVD episode
  • CD-ROM printables that can be used with all of your children
  • journal opportunities for kids to create their own book

A Look at Friends and Heroes Unit Study 1

Friends and Heroes Student Papers-1

{a peek at one of the student pages from Unit Study 1}

There are two to four weeks of learning materials in each Friends and Heroes homeschool unit.  Plans include science experiments, creative writing activities, Bible studies, history and geography lessons, discipleship, hands-on crafts, coloring pages, and all subject areas are taught from a Christian world view.

Unit Study 1 includes:

  • Friends and Heroes DVD Episode 1- Long Journey – which serves as stimulus material for cross-curricular studies
  • All teacher and student’s materials – included on CD-ROM – printable and reusable {I transferred ours to the iPad for easy reference}
  • Learner-centered, self-guided Unit Study manuals
  • Teacher’s Guide – with learning goals, background details, answer keys, internet links
  • Certificates of Achievement and binder covers

Unit Study 1 covers:

  • History/Geography: The Romans; Roman Trade; Roman money; Roman import and exports
  • Creative writing: Journal writing; Written expression and narration; Copy writing
  • Bible study: Daniel and the lions’ den and Jesus and the miraculous catch of fish; The Early Church
  • Science: Silver; Sand and cement; Greek and Roman discoveries
  • Crafts: Sculpture; Paper weaving; Pottery
  • Discipleship: Trusting others; Pride; Worries

    There are quite a few parts that we will be incorporating with our family over the next few months, in addition to what we’ve already worked on together. We’ll be breaking it up a little more instead of doing the focused study and tie it in to our current curriculum. There are several key components, especially the writing assignments and the science tie-ins, that our 11 and 9 year old will benefit from – and they won’t mind a little screen time to watch the videos either {grins}.

    The unit studies would be best for children ages 7 to 11, but they can be easily adjusted to accommodate younger or older children. Note: there are 13 different unit studies in the first level, and we were sent only Unit Study 1 to review.

What Families Will Enjoy

The homeschool units are VERY well laid out and easy to follow along. Here are a few things I appreciated:

Online Activities Friends and Heroes

Online activities for Friends and Heroes episodes

  • The CD-rom with the lesson plans breaks up the unit by lessons and can be printed out or stored on your iPad for quick reference.
  • Each lesson lists out what you will need to gather: for science, geography, etc. You don’t need to hunt through the plans to figure it out.
  • There are online resources including puzzles, quizzes, and games to go along with each episode {see examples for episode one here}.
  • The hands-on tie-ins for the lessons add depth to the lessons and definitely make history come alive.
  • Many of the student lessons can be self-guided for the older age range, including writing assignments, some of the science activities, Bible study and more {love this feature!}.
  • You do NOT have to do every single activity listed! No need to get overwhelmed at all the fun things there are to to. You can pick and choose and still have a fabulous unit study!

Creative Play and Fun with the Block Party Game Set

One of my favorite things to do with our kids is play games. Wooden blocks are another things that our children love, so the chance to combine both of those into fun block games is a big win for us!

Last year our family was introduced to Larsen Toy Lab and their mission to provide quality building blocks that will last for generations – and inspire families to be creative together. The ability to be creative and imaginative, without setting limits on what a toy can or cannot do – well, that’s something that I enjoy seeing happen.

About the Block Party Game Set

Block Party from Larsen Toy Lab

Block Party includes three fun games all in one convenient bag. All games are targeted for ages 3 and up and range from 2-6 players. The bag, stuffed full with 41 blocks, game pieces and instructions, has all you need to play three new games:

Strike Out – a building and strategy game where the players build a structure that won’t fall down and the player with the least strikes at the end of the game wins {see video example}

Ten Towers – players earn building cards and practice shape recognition and building {see video example}.

Pair Up – similar to a memory matching game, players try to find matching cards and gather the block to build the tallest tower by the game’s end {see video example}.

Creating games based around building blocks encourages creative play, and these games offer additional education skills such as balance, following directions, shape identification, and memory matching.

What We Love About Block Party

Block Party Larsen Toy Lab (1)

Our favorite games? Hmmm…it’s a toss up between Strike Out and Pair Up. Hoping you would have the tallest {and most stable} tower to make it to the end of Pair Up was so much fun, but the strategy of Strike Out was also interesting to watch the kids figure out {because you don’t want to be the one to knock a tower over}.

Ten Towers is a game that we need to play a little more, because there can be much more strategy involved in it. It may have been one of my choices to play, but only because I had figured out a way to get more points {I’m not competitive at all, no}.

There really are so many things that I love about the Block Party set from Larsen Toy Labs. Here are just a few…

Canvas Carry Tote – The game set includes a canvas tote to store all of the blocks and also a smaller canvas bag to store all of the game pieces and instructions {can’t say how much I love this}. And, it’s a little something that will help you carry the blocks around.

Sturdy Construction -All of the blocks are handmade from maple or cherry wood and will last for generations. The game pieces and instructions to go along are all printed full-color and on thick cardstock, then laminated for added protection.

Additional Play Ideas – Just in case your kids get in a mindset that they can only play a game using the blocks, there are creative building ideas included in the set. That way, you children can extend the fun beyond the game!

The Size – All of the blocks from Larsen Toy Lab are the perfect size for kids’ hands. The largest of their blocks in the 6” x 6” x 1” building platform, and there are currently 16 different block shapes made from maple and cherry wood.

A Guarantee – As with all of their products, Larsen Toy Lab offers a 100% money back guarantee {that alone speaks volumes to me personally}.

Beyond the games included in the set, the Block Party set has been a part of building projects around the house. That handy tote bag has been great to grab everything quickly and carry it to another room.

Homeschool Printing Tips

This post was sponsored by Staples. Words, ideas, and recommendations are mine. Please read my full disclosure policy for more details.

Printing Tips and Tricks

Emails frequently pop into my inbox with questions like:

  • What printer do you have and recommend?
  • Do you have any tips for saving money on printing?
  • How do you print it all? Doesn’t it get expensive?
  • Do you really print it all?

Perhaps you’ve noticed that I have a thing for printables. Along with creating the printables comes the inevitable – you have to print them out somehow. Our printer has gotten nothing if short of an amazing workout over the years. While ink can get pricey, there are a few ways that we try to save money on printing.

Printing Tips 101

Ink is never cheap, but printing is something we all end up doing. Here are a few ways that we’ve saved some money over the years. If you have a tip to add, please be sure to leave a comment below and share – I’ll add them to the list as I can!

  • Invest in a good printer. Believe me, I’ve been sucked into what seemed like a great deal, only to have a printer seemingly inhale the ink right out of the cartridges and not print well. You might pay a little more up front, but in the long run having a printer that lasts and does a good job is worth it!
  • Use the draft option when printing. Rarely do I use the best print option. The draft mode has always done a great job for us.
  • Print double sided – you’ll save a bit on paper too! Every little bit helps!
  • Paper matters. Pay attention to the type you buy. Super thin paper may be cheaper, but sometimes it doesn’t do the best printing. We use a paper with a bit of a heavier weight so it lasts longer for many of our printable projects.
  • Watch for sales. Ink does go on sale and buying it in bulk can be cheaper too!
  • Take advantage of the Staples Easy Rebates program – you can get money back with the click of a button and don’t even have to mail something in!
  • Recycle used cartridges for a rebate. Take advantage of refilling ink cartridges or turning in used cartridges for recycling and a rebate.

You don’t have to print every page of a document. Print what you need and save ink and paper that way. Sometimes I forget and just hit ‘print all’, but there are frequently pages that we don’t use in printables, and it’s ok to be choosey.

Our Printer Choice

Favorite Printer

For the past six years we’ve used an HP Officejet All-in-One printer, but with our move two years ago we had a little issue. Our printer wasn’t wireless and the only router we could plug in to was in our laundry room above the dryer. The constant rocking from the washer/dryer combo on the printer *may* have taken its toll on the poor printer (through no fault of its own).

We LOVED our HP All-in-One and it honestly did great on ink and print quality, so we took a trip to Staples to check out some of the updated HP printers – especially the wireless ones with eprinting capability. We purchased our last printer there and also a few of our laptops, and they have always been such a huge help.

There were a few features that we wanted to have in our new printer:

  • color and b/w printing
  • wifi networking {no cords to hook up to our network}
  • ePrinting {so we can print from our iPad or phone}
  • 2 sided printing
  • print/copy/scan/fax capabilities
  • ability to hold a lot of paper {because I hate to refill it}
  • USB card input

The printer that we finally decided on was the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus All-in-One Printer (currently $199). There are actually two different versions of this printer – the one we picked or the HP Officejet Pro 8600 with a smaller touchescren (currently $149). Essentially the HP 8600 was an updated version of the printer that we already had and loved – and it has been a great addition to our house.

A few things that I love about our HP 8600:

  • ePrinting ROCKS! Being able to quickly print a missing worksheet via a pdf file from my iPad is rather handy.
  • We’re wireless – oh, how I wish we had done this years ago. The printer is now stored in our homeschool room, so no more running to the laundry room or having our printer get ravaged by crazy dryer.
  • Printing on fast draft – this has been a HUGE $ saver for us on ink costs. Most of the things I print are done via the fast draft mode {check your printer settings}
  • Have I mentioned the wireless and eprinting? Yeah – loving that for sure. And I can email something to the printer if I’m at a friend’s house and it will be at home waiting for me. How nice is that?

First Grade Homeschool Art Lessons from Home Art Studio

Be sure to read through – there is a special coupon code for you to grab! We received the First Grade DVD from Home Art Studio to review and are excited to share our experience with you!

First Grade Art Projects with Home Art Studio

Before the year is finished, our school room walls are going to be covered with fun artwork thanks to Home Art Studio. Our first grader has been captivated by the lessons and projects. He is frequently found carrying around the DVD for First Grade Art. Since the very first lesson, he has asked every single day if he can work on another lesson.

About First Grade Art from Home Art Studio

First Grade Art Home Art Studio

If teaching art is something that makes you nervous, you are going to love Home ARt Studio. With the First Grade Art DVD, your child will have a personal art teacher, Ms. Lindsay Volin. Each lesson is guided by Ms. Volin, and first graders learn about art through different world cultures. In addition to the art projects that use a variety of art mediums, art vocabulary is discussed.

Included in the First Grade DVD:

  • 18 art projects instructed by video
  • PDF lesson plans with picture instructions

Having the lessons on DVD is very helpful, because children can pace themselves on the projects. When needed, the lesson can be paused until a part is completed, and then the DVD can be turned back on to continue the lesson.

The lesson structure and simple instructions are perfect for kids to follow along independently {with mom nearby, just in case}. Each of the lessons we’ve worked on so far has been broken up into two segments, so we can take our time working on a project and spend two days a week on our art lesson.

Home Art Studio First Grade Lesson Plans

The PDF lesson plans are so handy! The plans can be printed out and stored in a binder to see what supplies are required for upcoming lessons. The pdf plans also give parents a quick overview of each art lesson, including vocabulary words and tips for parents to extend the art activity in other learning areas of science, language, social studies and math.

Supplies are not included with the DVD, but a full supply list is available via Jerry’s Artarama or you can purchase supplies at your local art store. So far we have needed only a few basic supplies that we didn’t already have on hand, but they were very easy to find and we were able to quickly start our lessons.

How We’re Using Home Art Studio

First Grade Home Art Studio DVD

When I say that Kaleb is loving the lessons from Home Art Studio, I am not joking. He literally carries the DVD case around with him, talking about the different projects and asking when we will be able to finish them all. For now, he has been working on one project a week, and the lesson is broken up over the period of two days.

Rainbow Weaving from Home Art Studio

our Rainbow Weaving project

Although this DVD is geared for first grade, a few of the other kids are sneaking in and working on the lessons as well. The Home Art Studio program is perfect for using with multiple children. The projects are fun, colorful and really – art is great no matter what age you are!

Paper Roller Coaster Home Art Studio

our Paper Roller Coaster project

This year a small co-op that we are participating in is studying world geography and cultures, so the first grade DVD theme of art from around the world tied in perfectly with our school year. I’m hoping that we can even use a few of the projects with the younger children during our studies!

Mission to Mars Home Art Studio

our Mission to Mars project

Supplies can seem overwhelming, but we can use many of the items we purchased on future projects: items such as oil pastels, construction paper, tempera paint, etc…, and they may be supplies that you already have on hand.

Overall, we are excited to use Home Art Studio this year (and in years to come) and believe it is a great resource for families! Be sure to visit the Home Art Studio site and view one of their sample lessons so you can get an idea on how the program is set up.

Growing with God – 90 Devotions for Kids

With the start of school just around the corner, things around our house are beginning to feel a little hectic for me. There are lots of things to remember, supplies to gather, lessons to plan, and new schedules that need to be put into place.

Starting the school year off right is definitely important, and we want to begin with a routine that helps us grow as a family. One thing that we include in our day’s schedule is a devotional time, so that we are not only learning together academically, but spiritually as well.

Beginning the School Day with Encouragement

 imageA few months ago, I purchased 90 Devotions for Kids to read with the kids before starting school. This devotional from Adventures in Odyssey includes short challenges and encouragement from familiar AIO characters {and is fun if you try to read bits in their voices!}. It has been a devotional that all of our children have enjoyed and a great start to our mornings.

90 Devotions for Kids is geared toward kids ages 8 to 12 and covers fourteen different topics including salvation, discipleship, prayer, faith, forgiveness, giving, witnessing, and worship. The topics are broken up into seven different devotions with a weekly themed verse to memorize.

Each devotional includes a daily Bible verse, an example of the topic in action, daily challenges, and wise words from several residents of the fictional town of Odyssey. Fans of AIO will love  the time spent with familiar friends and those who haven’t listened to an episode will find 90 Devotions for Kids a great addition to their devotional time.

If you are looking for a devotional that is packed with truth and lots of fun, and one that will help you and your kids take a break together for Bible reading, prayer, and conversation, 90 Devotions for Kids would be a great addition to get you going this year. And really – you don’t have to wait until the first day of school. You can start now and get a bump up on the school year and have daily devotions already built into your routine! {and that’s a great thing!!}

What routine or habit are you hoping establish this year with your family?

Roots for the Journey CD Review

Music is a pretty big part of our family’s life. Throughout the day songs are typically playing in our home, car, or being belted out by one of the kids. When music can integrate worship and learning – well, that immediately makes it something that I desire our kids to hear more of, especially when it involves the Word of God.

Roots for the Journey cd

If you are familiar with any of Yancy’s music, her newest release Roots for the Journey may seem a bit different. While her music typically has a bit of a fun edge for kids, Roots for the Journey is more of a soft and relaxing worship CD full of Biblical truth. The music is unplugged, simple, and FABULOUS.

Here’s a bit more about the CD from Yancy…

“I started off making this a lullaby CD. Taking key scriptures and truths that I wanted to pass on to my son and make sure he knew and understood the direction and answer these scriptures provide us. As I worked in the studio, I realized that the music was shaping up to be way more than lullabies. Already, when I meet people in my life that are facing big mountains, fears or need answers I’ve been able to use these songs as a way to help strengthen their faith and help them meditate on what God’s Word says. I can’t wait to see how God uses these songs to strengthen the faith of those young and old.” ~ Yancy

Personally, I am loving the truths that are being learned by our kids and myself {my personal favorite is ‘His Eye is on the Sparrow’}. Roots for the Journey is packed with songs with gentle reminders of God’s faithfulness and will be an encouragement to all ages.

The 12 song on the Roots for the Journey CD includes: The Joy, Safe, Creator, Hope, His Eye Is On The Sparrow, Trust, Healer, White As Snow, Our God Reigns, Call, No Other Name, and I Don’t Want To Go.

Roots for the Journey app

One of the things that I am MOST excited about is the companion app that can be downloaded for iPad, iPod, and Droid devices. The Roots for the Journey app allows you to view the song lyrics, watch a short video on the story behind the song, read a short devotional based on the song, or work on an activity together for some hands-on fun. Overall it is a GREAT resource for families and a quick ‘go-to’ because it has all been planned out for you to grab and do.
