What I’m Reading (and the Kids Too)

I had been hoping to read more last month with my mom having surgery (and spending several days in the hospital with her), but honestly, reading was really hard to focus on and I ended up binge watching a show on Amazon in the wee hours of the morning between resetting all the crazy alarms that continued to go off during the night. Reading normally is something relaxing for me, but I needed something that required absolutely zero effort on my part other than pushing the play button. Shallow, but true.

This month though, I really do want to get a few books knocked off my stack and have some picked to hopefully fly through, while several (including Ferventare part-way done and I need some focused time to concentrate and absorb the content since they are a little ‘heavier’ in nature.

The Kids are Reading…

What I Read in January…

Years ago I read the 5 Love Language of Children book and the bulk of our kids were so little it was hard to really put them in a specific area. This time it really was much more fun to read and have the kids take the quiz as well. I’m planning to also read the teen version of the book.

As far as fiction reading, What She Knew was a very interesting read, and although there were some parts I skipped in Seven Sistersthe overall plot really pulled me in. I am definitely enjoying the Uncommon Heroes series from Dee Henderson as well. They’ve been on my shelf for years and I’m finally pulling them down to read!

That’s it for this month! What are you reading for yourself or together with the kids? Leave a comment and share. :)

My 2017 Reading List

2017-reading-list

Reading is a love of mine. And over the last several years I’ve really tried to push myself to reading more books for personal growth, instead of glossing over that section and going straight for the “reading candy.” You know – the stuff that you can’t get enough of, but it really doesn’t fill you up quite like a book that makes you stop and think a bit. :)

Last year I almost made it through my 2016 Reading List – and even read several of the books on my “if there is time” pile, but overall I read a total of 84 books. At the bottom of this post, I’m sharing a few of my favorites from the year.

Incidentally, I’m LOVING the GoodReads app to track what books I want to read, have read, and love see ing what others are reading.

The Main Books of 2017

The first book on the list is one I started, but didn’t have time to finish last year (a few fiction books may have gotten in the way of that), but otherwise, this is the main pile I would like to tackle. As I did last year, I’ve mentally sorted the books into stacks of why I want to read them (for personal growth, parenting, marriage, or just for fun). I am infamous for having several books going at a time, because sometimes topics don’t overlap, or I’m in the mood for something different.

“If There is Time” Pile

Fiction Books/Series to Look At

One thing I’d like to note in this area: while a lot of my books typically tend to be Christian historical fiction, I have been branching out a bit into teen lit (to read before my girls) and some other contemporary fiction. I personally have been a bit picky about much of the stuff I read, because for me too much language or other graphic stuff is a ‘trigger’ for me – so I tend to err on the side of books that aren’t raunchy or full of whatever. Last year there were a few that I read (JoJo Moyes) that were out of my comfort zone in some ways, but overall not bad (language mainly) – but generated conversation on topics in the books with friends for sure. All that said, I haven’t vetted all of the below series, so they may be complete busts!

 Favorite Books from Last Year

There were several books that I absolutely loved (and highly recommend), one of which wasn’t on my list, but I picked up after seeing it in a few various feeds. Below are my four favorite non-fiction picks for the year.

unoffendable

Hands down, Unoffendable by Brendan Manning was one book that impacted me the most this past year. It’s one I will keep on my shelf to read again, but there are so many nuggets of truth and it’s one book that will have you walking away with a different viewpoint on all those “rights” you feel you have. :)

Teaching from Rest by Sarah Mackenzie – if you homeschool, just put this book in your Amazon cart right now. Trust me.

The Life Giving Home by Sally Clarkson

The Life-Giving Home by Sally Clarkson – I’m so thankful for the wisdom and insight from Sally Clarkson. Her books are always such an encouragement to me, and this one did not disappoint!

Raising Grateful Kids

Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World by Kristen Welch – You all – please just read this. Parenting is tough work and encouragement along the journey is such a breath of fresh air, especially when it is tied in with balancing giving our kids what they need versus what they think they need.

That’s all for now! I’ll be sharing any additions and thoughts throughout the year every now and then. What books do you have in your stack for the year?

What I’m Reading (and the Kids Too)

The last few months have flown by in the preparation of getting ready for school, and while I typically always carry books with me, my non-fiction pile didn’t receive quite the dent I had really hoped to put in it. However, I did manage to fit a few books in (finding one that shockingly wasn’t on my 2016 reading list – that happens more often than I’d care to admit. I’m more of an ADD reader and would rather read what appeals to me in the moment).

Because of my wandering, a few of the books were moved to my current month’s reading list, along with some reading needed to fit in for lit classes I am teaching this year – let’s just say I’m trying to make my kids realize they aren’t the only ones yawning through a book (grins). Here’s a peek at what is on my pile for the remainder of the month.

The Kids are Reading…

What I Read in July and August…

Out of all the books I read during the past few months, I absolutely loved the first two on this list. One was a book read over a few months, the other – I laughed my head off through much of it envisioning vividly what Sophie was talking of. Love her books anytime. And Parenting is Heart Work – the last few chapters are ones I’m wanting to re-read to remind myself over and over (and have my hubby read).

Matters of the Heart – 52 Weeks of Scripture Memorization

Later this week I’ll be sharing my book picks for the upcoming month, but I couldn’t wait to share with you all since it releases TODAY!!

matters of the heartMatters of the Heart: a 52-Week Scripture Memorization Journey for Women is a 52-week Scripture memorization challenge. For me, this has come at a perfect time – summer is winding down and my morning routine is getting back into the ‘normal’ place.

I don’t know about you, but there are times when memorizing verses has been pushed aside – even though I know how very important it is for me! Throughout my life, Scripture has come to mind in so many different situations to encourage, convict, and comfort me, that’s why I am so excited about this addition to my mornings. In a few short minutes each day I can dig into God’s word, be encouraged by a devotional, write down thoughts and prayers, and memorize key verses.

The verses in each chapter are all KJV and fall within 12 monthly themes:

  • Mothering from the Heart
  • Walking in Love, Real Repentance,
  • The Joy of the Lord
  • God is Faithful
  • His Strength
  • God Our Provider
  • God is my Healer
  • Confronting Fear
  • Resting in Him
  • God’s Peace
  • Live to Give

What I’m Reading (July 2016) – Reading for Mom

July reading pileMy reading plans for June didn’t quite turn out as I anticipated. When our vacation didn’t happen, most of the reading time I’d set aside (in my head) was gone. And while we’ve been at the pool quite a bit, much of that has been in the role as swim mom and part of helping out a lot with the team. In short – the general craziness of summer. (grins) So much for slowing down, eh?

The bulk of my reading has been done at night – falling asleep with a book in my hands, and several of the books in my pile have carried over from last month into this month.

My July  2016 Reading Pile

My 2016 reading list is coming along well, and I’m pulling a few from that list to read as well as throwing in some fun fiction for good measure. My brain needs a bit of a break finishing up the school year and that’s my primary way of disconnecting and getting ‘lost’ for a bit. Here’s how my reading pile is shaping up for the month:

What I’m Reading (June 2016) – Reading for Mom

what I'm reading June 2016

Although it isn’t officially the first day of summer, it definitely feels like it around here. The pool is open and for our family, that means a LOT of time will be spent poolside in the upcoming months with warm weather and swim team. For me, life feels like it is finally slowing down some. The last month and a half have been a whirlwind of family visiting, traveling all over the place, and honestly not a lot of down time for reading (at least not as much as I’d like!).

Somehow though, summer seems to usher in a feeling of slowing down and taking a bit of time to enjoy a book (or ten). Yesterday I cracked open a few new books and made a little pile of books to read in the upcoming month. I’d love to hear any good books you all have to recommend as well!

My June 2016 Reading Pile

My 2016 reading list is coming along well, and I’m pulling a few from that list to read as well as throwing in some fun fiction for good measure. My brain needs a bit of a break finishing up the school year and that’s my primary way of disconnecting and getting ‘lost’ for a bit. Here’s how my reading pile is shaping up for the month:

  • Giddy-up, Eunice! by Sophie Hudson (releases this month – yay!) – I have LOVED her past books and sense of humor. Highly recommend any of her other books and know this one will not disappoint.
  •  Making it Home by Emily Wierenga – this one has been on my shelf for a bit, but making it a point to read this month
  • Parenting is Heart Work by Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller – I’ve read several of their other books (Motivate Your Child is fabulous) and they are ones you’ll want to keep on your shelf. I’m only one chapter in, and already loving this book.
  • Traces of Guilt by Dee Henderson
  • From This Moment by Elizabeth Camden
  • The Beautiful Pretender by Melanie Dickerson
  • The Green Ember by S.D. Smith

That’s it for this month! What are you reading for yourself or together with the kids? Leave a comment and share. :)
