Preschool Corner ~ Nativity Preschool Pack & Advent

Another week that didn’t go quite according to plan. I really shouldn’t be surprised anymore, but somehow I am. Monday I ended up having surgery for my lovely kidney stone that refused to come out of my body and Tuesday…well, I actually {for the most part} followed doctor’s orders and rested. I said mostly. :) And then snow…and trying to keep kids interested in school when snow is falling ~ ha!

We did continue on with our Advent devotions with Kaleb using Beginning with God at Christmas that goes along with the Beginner’s Bible. It’s a fun devotional for preschoolers from The Good Book company and has a simple coloring activity with each lesson, a sticker to show you completed the lesson, along with a short question/answer time for kids. It’s just enough to keep his attention ~ which I love.  The picture below shows one of the lessons we worked on last week.

Our Nativity Preschool Pack and Folder

You’ve all probably seen Carisa’s Nativity Preschool Pack that she put together and this was the ‘base’ for what we did most of the week. There were a few activities that we didn’t get to do {i.e. crafts}, so we’ll work on some of the fun stuff next week too.

We did most of the activities in the Nativity Pack and are storing them in folder to store them. Here’s a peek at what our finished folder looked like.

The front of the folder has a little name tag where Kaleb wrote his name and then a summary of the story that we read this week Sleepy Jesus along with his favorite part of the story.

Inside the folder we glued a verse that we practiced, Luke 2:11 {printables for this verse here}, pattern strips, our color tracing book, number matching sheet {folded accordian style}, animal/people sort & match, and beginning sounds tracers {most from the Nativity Preschool Pack}. I used a clear envelope to store the patterning pieces and the envelope flips up when we are doing the patterns.

The back of the folder has a book that we didn’t get to finish up this week and will work on next week ~ The Tale of Christmas {found at Musings of Me}.

I’ve uploaded our lesson plans for the week ~ nothing super crazy, but it has all the links in case you need them. We also did this cute A is for Angel craft. IMG_0185

Raising Rock Stars ~ Celebrating Advent

Not too long after Rick and I were married we began celebrating the season of Advent together as a couple. As we’ve added children into the mix, the way we celebrate has changed from year to year, but the main focus is still remembering the Reason for the Season.

In the center of our dining room table we have a simple Advent wreath. I arranged {fake} greenery in a basket and added in five candles ~ 4 tapers {3 purple and 1 pink} and then a larger white candle in the center {the Jesus candle}.

Each night after dinner we sit down as a family and read an Advent devotional together as a family. Last year we read the book Jotham’s Journey together and this year we are working on the second book in the same series, Bartholomew’s Passage by Arnold Ytreeide. Although the stories are geared for kids, I’ll admit that they pull me in just as much and Rick and I enjoy them too!

I’ll be sharing some of our regular weekly Bible things later, but wanted to share about Advent since it just started. Carisa has some Christmas resources too this week, so be sure to visit her at 1+1+1=1 and see some of the other Raising Rock Star posts!

Preschool Corner: 4th of July Style

Since I have done little {if anything} over the past few years to celebrate the 4th of July with the kids, THIS was apparently my week to shove holiday activities to the front and make up for years gone by.

We picked up a book by Sheri Dean called Fourth of July {Our Country’s Holidays}, a book from the Weekly Reader Early Learning Library. It was simple enough for Zachary to follow and explained how Independence Day came to be and the different ways Americans celebrate the holiday.

Other activities from this week:

~ We worked on learning the Pledge of Allegiance

~ We made some fun hats and sparklers to wear at the parade on Saturday

~ Used cookie cutters and paint to make star prints

~ Made ‘flower fireworks‘ to hang from our dining room light using markers, coffee filters, pipe cleaners, and some water. These turned out so neat and are basically tye-dyeish. CUTE!

~ Tried to draw Uncle Sam….but Zachary got a little distracted and just drew a boy. :)

If you didn’t happen to catch my post with Fourth of July resources, there are some great links for Independence Day activities for your kids. :)

We’re still working on our “School’s Out Challenge” which is going GREAT with all the kids, but Zachary has worked his way through about 2/3 of the chart so far!! Yeah for incentives!!

Fourth of July Resources

Fourth of July sorta snuck up on me. It wasn’t until I did this Friend Makin’ Monday post that I realized we’ve done little over the years for the fourth. Since we have no pictures at all to show for any 4th of July activities, I figured this would be a good year to start. I also posted some Fourth of July crafts {a cute hat and ‘sparkler’} that we made today over on our family blog, No Ordinary Moments, so stop by and check them out

If I get really ambitious, we might even do a little unit study, but in the meantime {and since one of you asked}, here are some resources for you to use for your own Independence Day study.
