Next week is promising to be a bit crazy in our household since our official move date has been set. Most likely school as we generally know it will be put aside while we pack and unpack, but in the midst of it, I am truly hoping that our kids will be able to participate in The Great Backyard Bird Count from February 18th-21st.

At our current house we do see several different birds each day, but our new house promises to have a MUCH larger variety of birds!! Today I’ll be busy printing off a tally sheet and getting our bird feeders ready to move over to the new house.

The website for The Great Backyard Bird Count has some helpful articles and tips on their site too, even if you are unable to participate this time around ~ tips on choosing bird food, bird feeder placement, selecting the right bird feeder, identifying tricky birds, and myths about bird feeding.

Learn more on how you can participate here and print off some great helps for educators including regional bird checklist and info on a photo contest too!

Will you be participating in The Great Backyard Bird Count or have you in the past?

This will be SO great – we have so many different varieties that we can see from our kitchen windows every day. The kids will love this. :)

    • I can’t wait to see what we’ll have at our new house!! :) I forgot to
tell you that we met our new neighbors and he mentioned {in front of the
kids} that they have seen bears and bobcats around our houses. You
should have seen the look on Laurianna’s face!

  2. We do participate in the count and love it! We don’t usually add any new birds to our list, but it is nice to count them more specifically. Thanks for advertising it.

  3. We are planning on doing the Great Backyard Bird Count for the 1st time this year! I am so excited- I have tons of fun educational things for the kids to do related to birds, and this will definitely be a fun activity. Thanks for sharing!

  5. This is our first year participating and we are looking forward to it.

  6. Thanks for mentioning this! I’ve never heard of it but plan to participate. This will be a perfect project for our current study of birds with the Apologia curriculum! Now, I need to learn to identify some birds in a hurry!

  7. What a great idea! A great thing to do in the morning while eating breakfast!

  8. Will have to get our bird book out. Saw this mentioned on Our Nifty Notebook. I think my kids would really like this activity.

  9. Thanks for the reminder and the website! I was just mentioning to Bug that we should do this, as I watched a huge number of birds finding worms in the yard. I knew it was coming up, now I know the details! :)

  10. Jolanthe,
If you look further on the website, you can see previous year’s data and do a lot of fun bird statistics graphing.

We love the Cornell Lab of O…took a walk there just last week in the snow! And we saw plenty of cool tracks.
